OSHER 384 - Kaleidoscopes: The Science and the Art

In 1817, Sir David Brewster obtained a patent for his invention of the kaleidoscope. He called his invention an instrument for creating and exhibiting an infinite variety of beautiful forms. How right he was. His invention has since fascinated and inspired generations of people. Learn about the history of the kaleidoscope (including recent developments), how kaleidoscopes are constructed (one of the better things about geometry), and how they work. The highlight of the workshop will be the opportunity for each participant to construct and take home a working kaleidoscope.
