This interdisciplinary and internationally community-engaged course is designed to provide students with an understanding of issues related to international migration with first-hand experiences interacting with refugees and immigrants from Burma who reside on the western border of Thailand. The course is designed for students with majors or interest in social work, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. Prior to, during, and after a two-week trip to the western border of Thailand, students will learn about typical health and social conditions in the region. In addition they will lean about the historical events and political conditions that have contributed to refugee camp warehousing and large-scale migration of the Karen and other ethnic groups from Burma into the area.
