The course begins with fundamentals; keys, scales, intervals, and chords, then the function of each chord quality in tonal progressions. Those chords are then examined in common phrase models, Covered next are melodic devices and structure followed by formal design. Finally, the introduction of chromaticism, extended chromaticism, and post- tonal experimentalism. Music examples will include classics such as Bach, Chopin and Beethoven, but also Led Zeppelin, Chick Corea, Willie Nelson, and Linkin Park.
