OSHER 159 - The Age of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism

In the mid-nineteenth century Paris was the art capital of Europe. It provided a rich environment for the creation of new art forms that were adopted by artists like Monet, Renoir, Degas, and others. These modern masters developed new subjects, employed innovative techniques, and used vivid colors that distinguished their works from all the earlier Old Masters. Post-Impressionist artists like Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cezanne moved the art world even further forward toward the twentieth century when artists broke entirely with the past. Together we'll explore the cultural and artistic traditions that led to these amazing artistic movements.
