This graduate-level course provides a comprehensive critical examination of multilingual education through contemporary theoretical frameworks and research. Students will explore how language ideologies, power structures, and social justice intersect in educational contexts serving multilingual learners. The course begins with foundational concepts including language ideologies, raciolinguistic frameworks, and native speakerism, then progresses through critical theories of intersectionality, consciousness-raising, and equity approaches. Students will analyze language policy, assessment practices, and teacher preparation models while investigating innovative pedagogical approaches including translanguaging, family engagement, and student agency. Through creative critical reflections, community interviews, and collaborative portfolio development, participants will develop critical consciousness and practical skills for transformative multilingual education. The course emphasizes the assets and knowledge that multilingual communities bring to educational settings while challenging deficit-oriented perspectives prevalent in traditional educational approaches.
