PRTS 1304 - 001 Backcountry Ski Wasatch


Staying safe in the backcountry means learning avalanche awareness (rescue, terrain, weather, snowpack, and decision-making/human factors), side-country ethics, choosing appropriate tours, navigation, basic 1st aid, and field repairs. Leave No Trace skills appropriate for the winter and information regarding natural resource management will also be covered in this course. Previous Avalanche Education and basic touring experience are strongly encouraged. Class meets on-campus on Feb.11 only. Attendance for the first class is mandatory. Additionally, issues related to management of U.S. Forest Service administered lands, such as those used in this ski class, as they relate to recreation and other uses. This course is available for Novice through Advanced skiers, and will be grouped based on each individual's skiing ability.Class meets on-campus on Jan. 16 only. Learn the standards published by the American Avalanche Association for Avalanche Rescue Courses, including (a) avalanche rescue principles, (b) avalanche gear and technique, (c) companion rescue process, (d) avalanche victim basic patient care, (e) recognizing needs and identifying additional resources. Class meets online on Jan 22 only. Attendance at the first class meeting is mandatory. Field experience is Feb. 17(President's Day).
