This Department of Anthropology Special Topics course, "Indigeneity in the Americas" will be taught in Spanish. Readings are primarily in English, with options to read in Spanish. The course is taught by a macehualli (native Nahuatl speaker), also a native speaker of Spanish, and seeks to explore the various indigenous cultures throughout Latin America. The course will begin with historical studies of Nahuatl, Maya, and Inca populations, examining preconquest societies to better understand the impact of the arrival of Europeans, conquest, and colonization. The course will then explore the diversity of Latin American indigenous cultures in contemporary society. Topics include gender, religion, migration, health and healing, language, and interculturality. Students will learn about the cultural wealth preserved by indigenous cultures and their contributions to the global world. This is the graduate course/section for ANTH 3969-001: Indigeneity in the Americas. This Department of Anthropology Special Topics course, "Indigeneity in the Americas" will be taught in Spanish. Readings are primarily in English, with options to read in Spanish. The course is taught by a macehualli (native Nahuatl speaker), also a native speaker of Spanish, and seeks to explore the various indigenous cultures throughout Latin America. The course will begin with historical studies of Nahuatl, Maya, and Inca populations, examining preconquest societies to better understand the impact of the arrival of Europeans, conquest, and colonization. The course will then explore the diversity of Latin American indigenous cultures in contemporary society. Topics include gender, religion, migration, health and healing, language, and interculturality. Students will learn about the cultural wealth preserved by indigenous cultures and their contributions to the global world.
